Flushing the toilet with hand washing water is just one idea on show at the three day Melbourne Save Water Save Energy Expo.
This has been standard in Japanese bathrooms for many years. It is a toilet with a hand basin integrated on the cistern. The water that is used for washing your hands after using the toilet is then used to flush the toilet.
This three day expo is the first of its kind in Australia and it is hoped that people will leave the event with a better knowledge of recycling water for better use.
There are 120 stall holders, who have green gadgets that will do anything from conserving water to composting toilet waste.
Other more simple ideas include simply taking a shower rather than a bath to conserve water. A triple A rated nozzle on show used less than half of the water usually required with other shower heads.
There is also a composting toilet that is billed as being low maintenance. The stall holder says that this toilet will dispose of bathroom waste without odour.
The toilet is made by a Brisbane based company. It is chemical and water free. It uses wood chips to compost the toilet waste, and this is done in an under house tank.
The toilet system costs around $3,500 Australian dollars, and the uptake has been high. Many orders are from rural dwellers who are facing an increasing battle with the drought, so understand more than most the need to conserve water. Other orders have come from commercial users.
Stall holder Robyn Easton said that “For most of our customers, it is a huge issue. There are buying water in, and they don’t want to be flushing it down the toilet.”
