The initial contract by Hampshire county council to collect, store and dispose discarded motor vehicles has been given to Silverlake Garage Ltd, a local firm.
However, Silverlake Garage Ltd is only anticipating the collection of fewer than two thousand motor vehicles annually from the contract because of the high prices of scrap metal which has shrunk the number of abandoned cars in the county.
The three year contract obligates Silverlake Garage Ltd to collect vehicles and process them at their concrete centre in Shedfield, which is situated close to Bishop’s Waltham.
Silverlake Garage Ltd has extended the acreage of this centre from 4 to 9 acres and is constructing a two million pound facility which will raise its present de-pollution ability by three times in October this year when it starts operations.
The firm said that cars will be taken to pieces and recycled in accordance with the regulations of ELV, which requires that eighty five per cent of each car by weight is reused or recovered and this should increase to ninety five per cent by the year 2015.
The general manager of Silverlake Garage, Steve Diaper, disclosed that he did not expect the new deal would net them many discarded vehicles because the number of discarded cars was going down because of the rising prices of scrap metal. The general manager was however elated at landing the contract since it would raise the stature of their portfolio.
Steve Diaper further expressed hope that the number of ELVs would rise and that the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform would their onslaught on unlawful activities.
