Energy from waste plant to be built in Telford

An Energy from Waste plant with a capacity to process sixty two thousand tonnes of residual waste annually using combined heat and power technology is to be built in Telford.

The United Kingdom chapter of SITA intends to erect the new plant in collaboration with Cyclerval UK which is a provider of technology. The plant will be situated adjacent to the Granville landfill centre which is presently run by SITA UK on behalf of Telford and Wrekin Council.

A spokesperson for the UK chapter of SITA disclosed that the facility would be involved in the processing of all the waste collected by the council but would also process waste from other sources.

Plans are underway to have the facility utilise oscillating kiln technology to generate heat and power. The SITA spokesperson clarified that the oscillating kiln technology has been under development for several years to offer a solution for community-sized energy from waste facilities.

The energy from waste plant is expected to produce approximately three and a half mega watts of electricity and ten mega watts of heat.

Once approval for the planning has been given, the building of the plant is projected to take around twenty four months, with commissioning consuming another 4 months.

Councillor Steve Bentley, the cabinet member for the environment, gave the assurance that any interest in introducing an Energy from Waste facility will be considered on the basis of its merits and demerits and the consequences it would have for the council. He also added that the council was very keen that the community be involved in consultations on issues concerning management of waste early enough.
