New recycling centre gets go ahead

A new recycling bring centre will be set up at the Prince William Parade car park. This is despite the proposal being met with a lot of opposition from the residents.

Sixteen recycling bins for dry recyclables such as paper, glass, drink cartons, plastic and cans will be positioned in the eastern car park adjacent to the waste water treatment plant.

Members of Eastbourne Borough Council’s planning committee approved the plan at a meeting held recently despite concerns raised by residents. The residents of the area are worried that the new recycling bring site will lead to antisocial behaviour and noise. They also fear it will lower the tone of the area.

Letters against the plan were sent out to residents living in Grenada Close, Cabot Close, Colombus Drive, Hudson Close, St Kitt’s Drive, Martinique Way and Magellan Way and those opposing the location of the recycling bring site argued that it would to the area being used as a dumping site.

The residents were suppoted by Meads Conservative Councillor Barry Taylor, who voted against the proposal stating that he felt sorry for people living near recycling bring sites.

Councillor Barry Taylor disclosed that even though he was in favour of recycling, he preferred kerbside collection of recyclables rather than recycling bring sites. He added that it was a huge imposition on the residents of Langney Point and that it was going to be unpleasant and the feeling was widespread.

The recycling bring site was granted planning permission for twelve months.
