A new group known as Freeconomy Wrexham has been formed in Wrexham with the aim of bringing communities together in order to save them money and reduce the amount of discarded items being sent to landfill sites.
The mission of Freeconomy Wrexham is to organise ‘bring and take’ events in communities all over Wrexham on a monthly basis in which members of the public can take their unwanted household goods like personal computers, furniture and clothing so that others who might have a use for them can take them away at no cost.
James Whelan of Freeconomy Wrexham likened the concept to a swap shop except that no one is obligated to take anything or bring anything. James Whelan added that it was a way of enhancing the community spirit, promoting recycling and ensuring that as little waste as possible ended up in landfill sites.
All over the country the old practise of recycling whereby unwanted items are given to those who might have a need for it has enjoyed a rebirth especially with the proliferation of websites such as a freecycle. But unlike freecycle, Freeconomy Wrexham offers accessibility to all kinds of people irrespective of whether they have an internet connection or not.
While there is no fee charged for use of the service, donations are welcomed and they all go towards footing the transportation costs incurred to deliver goods to the site as well as the expenses incurred in hiring the community centres. So far the Freeconomy Wrexham events have garnered wide support across Wrexham.
