An additional seven thousand and five hundred households in Preston will all soon be able to recycle their food waste on a weekly basis.
Households in Fishwick, Ashton, Frenchwood and Ribbleton areas of the city will be getting their food waste collection bins in the coming weeks in readiness of the weekly food waste collection which will be launched this coming May.
Already seven thousand and five hundred residents in the inner areas of Preston are able to recycle their food waste on a weekly basis through a highly liked initiative which has ensured the recycling of more than eight hundred and fifty tones of food waste since it was started in Preston in 2005.
Under the initiative cooked food, raw food, left over food, unwanted food or even expired food can all undergo recycling and converted into compost which is environmentally friendly and can be made use of locally.
The Cabinet Member for Environment and Neighbourhood Services, Councillor Keith Sedgewick said that the weekly food waste collections they were introducing in new areas was in response to what the residents had been crying for and that when it came to rotting food waste the residents wanted it done weekly to avoid the stench.
The councillor admitted that the residents had shown a marked interest in recycling and Preston was one of the first areas to have a weekly food waste collection service which had been successful so far.
The Cabinet Member for Environment and Neighbourhood Services admitted that their goal was to offer the weekly food waste collection services to all households in Presto in the next few years.
