School scoops recycling awards

Students in schools throughout Flintshire have won prestigious awards for their contribution in making the county greener by recycling old Yellow Pages directories. Six schools throughout Flintshire were awarded as part of the countrywide Yellow Woods recycling scheme, run by Yellow pages.

The Yellow Woods recycling scheme encourages students throughout the United Kingdom to amass as many old copies of the Yellow Pages and take them to their respective schools for recycling.

From Caerwys, Ysgol yr Esgob won the top Gold Oak Award for Flintshire and were also presented with a cash prize of three hundred pounds for the largest rise in recycling rate since the challenge was last held. Ysgol y Waun from Gwernaffield came second and was presented with the Silver Birch award and a cash prize of two hundred pounds. The Bronze Beech award and a cash prize of one hundred pounds went to Saltney Ferry Primary School.

Highly praised was Penyffordd Junior School who came in fourth place. Mountain Lane Primary School in Buckley emerged fifth and was presented with a bonus prize of one hundred pounds for collecting one thousand six hundred and fifty nine directories which was the highest number in the county.

Pupils from Ysgol Gymraeg Mornant were also praised for their endeavours in the scheme. All the schools got seeds from The Woodland Trust which they were asked to plant in their school or in their respective communities.

The total number of Yellow Pages which have been rerouted from ending up in landfills by pupils in Flintshire is eleven thousand three hundred and twelve.
