In West Berkshire, Veolia Environmental Services has entered into a multi-million pound deal for the provision of waste management services for the next two and a half decades.
West Berkshire Council chose Veolia Environmental Services to handle waste collection, recycling, disposal and street cleaning services in a contract worth more than five hundred million pounds. The contract was previously held by Biffa.
The West Berkshire Council contract comes hot on the heels of other deals Veolia has got in both Southwark and Shropshire and is a welcome addition to Veolia’s growing list of clients in the United Kingdom.
The chief executive of Veolia Environmental Services, Denis Gasquet was confident that they would be able to offer sustainable integrated waste management. He pointed out that Veolia’s approach was to integrate innovative recycling and collection services for the public and reliable and efficient treatment and disposal of waste.
Implementation of the deal will involve Veolia Environmental Services constructing and operating a recycling plant, waste transfer station, composting plant and household waste recycling sites. Financial support in the form of credit will also be forthcoming from the government’s Private Finance Initiative to the tune of approximately 28.7 million pounds.
West Berkshire Council has already picked a brownfield site in Padworth as the best location for the facilities.
In the meantime residual waste will be going to landfill or a waste plant on the outskirts of West Berkshire which has a capacity of handling up to twenty five thousand tonnes of waste annually. This is about a third of all the waste spawned in the district. Veolia however is yet to make a decision on the particular waste plant.
