Numerous nominations for green awards received

Nominees for the Green Watch Heroes Awards have been received and are representative of all sections of the society.

The nominees include educational institutions, business organisations and even families. The awards are being run by Gazette Newspapers in conjunction with Southern Electric, a local supplier of electricity.

The intention of the Green Watch Heroes Awards is to acknowledge and appreciate the tireless efforts of people in making Deane and Basingstoke a safer, cleaner and greener place to live and work in.

Kempshott Infant School has been nominated by Debbie Grace, whose son attended the school in his earlier years. In her nomination letter Debbie Grace observed that Kempshott Infant School was proud of its recycling efforts. She disclosed that the children at the school are taught to collect their fruit peels and uneaten fruits and put them in a compost bin for later use as bedding for the plants in the school premises.

Debbie Grace added that the school had two buses collecting and picking children daily and this lowered greenhouse emissions since it reduced the number of cars running to and fro which would be the case if the responsibility of the children’s transport was left to the parents.

Catherine Horgan nominated her associates who comprise the “Green theme team” at Wella UK. She noted that the “Green theme team” was working tirelessly to promote recycling at the workplace.

Just Learning Nursery in Basingstoke was also nominated for inculcating a culture of recycling to young ones at an early age.

The award and prize-giving ceremony will be held at the BCOT’s Robert Newman Restaurant on the twenty fourth of April.
