Row over new bins system

In the Calder Valley Ward councillors allied to the Liberal Democrat party have opposed a plan by the Conservative cabinet members to let the waste collection and recycling contract of Calderdale Council. The councillors let their views known during a special meeting of Calderdale Council’s Health and Social Care Scrutiny Panel. The meeting had been after both the Liberal Democrats and Labour opposition group had questioned the Cabinet’s plans to let the waste collection and recycling contract.

Councillor Ann McAllister who is the Conservative council leader accused the councillors of making much ado about nothing. She instead urged the councillors to avoid scare mongering and instead engage in encouraging the people.

Backing her was Councillor Graham Reason of Northowram-Shelf who warned that Council Tax bills could increase if the bags, bins, buckets and boxes scheme did not take off as had been envisaged.

On the other hand Councilor Janet Battye of Calder who is also the Liberal Democrat group leader argued that the population generally were supporting the plan to raise recycling efforts in significant levels but two major problems stood in the way of the plan.

One of the problems was that people did not know how the decision would be reached upon on whether they were going to be issued with a wheelie bin or whether they would be able to retain the black bags.

The other problem was the people were not happy with the fact that they were neither consulted nor informed concerning what was in the waste collection and recycling contract.
