The first facility for recycling services is to open in central Berkshire in Reading. Reading’s new household waste recycling centre includes banks for books and music, textiles and shoes
The Central Berkshire Waste Partnership has revealed a state-of-the-art household waste recycling centre on Island Road, on the site of a former CA facility. The Partnership is made up of Bracknell Forest, Reading and Wokingham borough councils
The site is the first major infrastructure to be developed under the Waste Partnership’s - known as Re3’s- £600 million contract with Waste Recycling Group. The Waste Recycling Group was signed in 2006 to develop waste solutions over the next 25 years.
Among the new recycling facilities on offer are containers for materials such as lightbulbs, household batteries, printer cartridges and drinks cartons.
Once inside the indoor centre, visitors can deposit their unwanted items over a low-height wall or directly in containers. This makes it easier and safer for people to recycle.
Re3 project manager Oliver Burt commented: “We’ve tried to keep things as simple as possible, but at the same time this site is light-years away from what residents are used to. The overall experience will combine both ease of access with awareness raising and maximised recycling.”
