Big improvements are planned for Barrow tip.
The facility, on Walney Road, is to get an extension to provide more space for the collection of recyclables.
Councillors are being encouraged to approve the proposed changes when they meet next week.
Dr Julian Diaper, the county council project development officer making the recommendations, said: “Increasing the opening hours and developing this Household Waste Recycling Centre will increase accessibility to recycling services and boost tonnage of waste to be recycled and composted.” Dr Diaper explained that the tip would be developed using land to the south of the site, and added: “The proposed HWRC will provide a comprehensive recycling facility as well as coping with the anticipated increase in volume of waste in future years.
“The site layout will minimise traffic congestion on the site and so that there should be no queuing to get to the site. The current estimated total cost of development will be £750,000.”
Under the plans, the opening hours will switch from the present 8am-4pm to 8am-6pm in April. Dr Diaper commented, “By increasing the opening hours by two hours a day we will increase accessibility of this service to local residents.”
Councillors on Barrow Local are expected to consider Dr Diaper’s recommendations at their meeting on Tuesday.
