The incinerator proposed for Splott in Cardiff will receive an extended deadline for residents to voice their concerns prior to the Cardiff council granting an environmental permit.
Environment Agency Wales initially backed the proposed plant and but has extended the deadline for consultations by 10 days after concerns arose that residents would not have time to comment due to a school holiday. Cardiff council has already given the project planning permission.
According to a statement from Environment Agency Wales, the body wants to make sure that all householders have ample time to comment and voice concerns regarding the planned facility. It also added that the permit details the plant’s environmental implications and its possible affect on people’s health. However, it does not cover issues related to traffic, operating hours, pollution or visual impact.
Those issues, which are largely the point of contention in most incinerator proposal cases, have already been cleared with the granting of planning permission by the Cardiff council. In its draft, Environment Agency Wales said that the plant will not pose any significant health risks to householders living nearby. It also said that the plant will not adversely affect the environment. However, despite the detailed report, the Viridor-backed facility has met with opposition from residents.
Campaigners that oppose the facility have said that waste management issues would be better solved through other means of disposal. Edmund Schluessel, secretary for Cardiff Against the Incinerator, said that the group needed more people to get involved to oppose the plant.
