Villagers in Caerphilly are planning a protest after odour from rotting food waste at a local compost centre has become a burden.
Residents in Gelligaer, Nelson and Penybryn said that they can smell the Bryn compost site causing them to be unable to open their windows during the summer. They aim to protest and force the firm to take immediate action. The rally will be held at Greenhill school in Gelligaer on Wednesday.
The composting firm said that it is already working alongside the Environment Agency for a more long term solution to the problem. However, Ray Matthews, a resident from Gelligaer said that residents are concerned about the potential health risks associated with breathing in the odours. Mr Matthews said that most people want to support recycling, but it has become a quality of life issue for the locals.
A spokesperson at Bryn Compost said that the site does not pose a threat to people’s health and that all appropriate measures are being taken to remedy the situation. The spokesperson added that the composting firm realises the odour is a problem and is cooperating with the Environment Agency to improve the situation.
Bryn Compost has already put in a planning application for approval from Caerphilly council to be able to enclose it process inside a structure and begin composting with a different approach. The council will make a decision on the application in the coming months.
