Scotland’s first minister in talks with Iberdrola to create green jobs

Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond has entered into discussions with Spanish energy giant Iberdrola in an attempt to develop renewable energy projects within the country.

With the aim of boosting green jobs for those educated in the sector, the first minister has already met with company execs to create a new wind and offshore energy generation facility. Meeting with the firm’s chief executive Ignacio Galan, the deal is likely to create thousands of local jobs.

Iberdrola has already become a major industry player within the Scottish market and already owns ScottishPower. ScottishPower recently unveiled plans to implement new state-of-the-art technology in its European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) located in Orkney.

According to the director of EMEC, Neil Kermode, the move will guarantee that Scotland’s Highlands and neighbouring islands remain at the forefront of renewable tidal and marine energy around the globe. He added that it would push Scotland to the head of the global industry as the sector begins to accelerate.

An additional initiative being developed in Redcar and Cleveland, will see green energy courses more sought after as the councils begin to allow energy generated by household solar panels to be sold back to the national grid.

Scotland has been identified has possessing a large portion of the world’s potential marine energy sources and several renewable energy firms have begun to pursue projects in the area. With the world’s largest tidal turbine set to be shipped to the region, the sector has begun to take-off immensely.
