Nuneaton and Bedworth residents will recycle more beverage cans

A new scheme will be launched in Nuneaton and Bedworth as part of a larger initiative to boost household recycling rates in the area.

With a particular focus on beverage cans and metal packaging materials, the scheme will incorporate a series of leaflets that will be sent door-to-door designed to explain to borough residents how the new programme will work. Lasting 6 weeks, the scheme will encompass the existing Red Box kerbside recycling scheme that the local council currently operates.

‘Metal Matters’, as the initiative has been dubbed, will see residents aim to increase the amount of metal packaging recycled in the home, including but not limited to aluminium beverage cans such as soda cans and others. Cllr Bill Shepard, the cabinet member responsible for recycling, said that the council saw it as a great opportunity to increase recycling rates around the community.

Mr Shepard further reiterated that the findings from the 6-week programme will reveal to the local authority ways to improve recycling rates around the borough. Results of the summer study will be analysed during the fall.

Nuneaton and Bedworth is just one of the UK’s many councils that has begun to implement schemes such as this in an effort to boost recycling rates in time for upcoming EU recycling targets. With the new coalition government incorporating new recycling and waste management legislation rapidly, councillors are working hard to meet looming deadlines to increase household recycling and cut down on waste sent to landfills around the country.
