Earlier this year, Sunny Delight’s six manufacturing plants spread out between Spain and the US became zero waste facilities.
The Ohio-based firm said that it had made progress in its environmental goals as detailed in its 2009 referendum – Sustainability Report. The report was released to the public this week and spans several topics including sustainability plans for transportation, operation, energy and water use, waste management and packaging.
The popular beverage group said it had made the most progress in diverting waste from landfill and reducing overall waste generation. Originally sending 1,140 tonnes of waste to landfill in 2007, the juicemaker moved to sending 418 tonnes of waste to landfill in 2009, and finally made the switch to zero waste in early 2010.
According to the company, its manufacturing plants have not only increased production volume by over five per cent since 2007, but have also reduced water use by two per cent as of 2009. Focusing its water reduction efforts on the manufacturing process, the company’s 2011 water targets are based on the amount of non-product water needed for each gallon of juice production.
The company outlined in a note that it wants make additionally improvements to its energy efficiency levels, but that so far savings from 2009 had proved to be significant. Sunny Delight made huge strides on its climate goal, which requires that the company reduce its per-unit emissions by 25 per cent. Since 2007, the firm has already lowered its normalised emissions by 20 per cent.
