Landscaping firm in Cardiff to use timber for biomass fuel

A Cardiff-based company is gearing up to recycle construction waste and timber in order to produce biomass fuel.

Cardiff Landscaping and Maintenance Services will be the first company in South Wales to earn an award from WRAP Cymru ( Waste & Resources Action Programme in Wales). Set-up back in May 2009, The Taffs Well-based landscaping firm has received a grant totalling £15,763 from WRAP Cymru in order to construct the green waste recycling centre.

The company will begin recycling green waste and timber collected from local businesses and all funding from the grant will be put towards purchasing new recycling equipment including skips, a collection vehicle and a new building. The overall project is estimated to cost £52,544.

Once completed, the new recycling centre will receive waste collected by Cardiff Landscaping and then be processed and sold as biomass fuel. The new facility will have the capacity to process up to 2,000 tonnes of timber waste during the first year and is anticipated to be fully operational by 10 weeks time. Cardiff

Landscaping managing director, Owen Hughes said that the new plant will allow the firm to clear work sites at a faster rate and gives customers a much-needed recycling solution. Mr Hughes added that companies are becoming more environmentally aware and the potential for recycling was large.

WRAP will seek to see other businesses follow in Cardiff Landscaping’s example. Beth Winkley, the director of WRAP Cymru said that currently there is a need for recycling facilities accessible to small businesses across Wales.
