The Health and Safety Executive will begin its investigation into a large waste transfer plant fire that broke out in North Yorkshire.
Crews responded to word of a fire after BCB Environment Management Ltd. Located in Marston Moor Business Park in Tockwith reported its facility was on fire during the early morning on Wednesday. During the peak of the blaze, at least 30 fire personnel were on hand using an aerial ladder platform and five fire engines.
North Yorkshire fire services said that overnight it would keep one engine at the scene in anticipation of any further outbreaks. The remainder of the building, which was consumed by the blaze, will be demolished on Friday.
According to BCB Environment Management there have been no injuries reported. It was further reported that there was no indication at present as to how the blaze began.
However, the investigation will take into account the ongoing protests by campaigners against the site’s planned multi-million pound expansion. As the firefighters fought the fire, residents close to the hazardous waste management plant were warned to keep their doors and windows shut and remain inside.
The company was facing massive opposition to its expansion proposal and furthermore had been fined tens of thousands of pounds for breaching health and safety regulations earlier in the year.
