New scheme will see chewed gum recycled in Hereford

A new scheme launched in Hereford will aim to recycling chewing gum as car tyres, mobile phone covers and children’s toys.

The campaign, which will begin Wednesday and run until 15 September, will look to urge consumers to responsibly dispose of chewing gum or incur an £80 fee. Special ‘Gumdrop’ recycling bins will be placed throughout the city to encourage this latest endeavor.

Once the ‘Gumdrop’ bin is full, the entire container will be removed and the gum will be recycled into a various line of useful items. Herefordshire is just one of the twelve authorities within the UK that have been chosen to participate in the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, appropriately dubbed the 2010 Chewing Gum Campaign.

According to Cllr. John Jarvis, the chair of Safer Herefordshire, the statistics show that the Government spends around £150m per year to remove nearly 3.5 billion pieces of carelessly discarded chewing gum across the UK. He also said that it was important for Herefordshire residents to help reduce this amount.

Cllr Jarvis added that the council was delighted to be working in conjunction with Keep Britain Tidy on the Gumdrop programme and was hoping for a successful campaign. Gumdrop bins will be placed in

Herefordshire in the following areas: Widemarsh Street, High Town, Hereford Railway Station, Hereford Bus Station, Capuchin Lane, Union Passage, Commercial Street, and Dusk Nightclub.
