The plans for a new multi-million pound waste-to-energy plant have been revealed.
The waste reprocessing facility, set to be constructed on Teesside, will create up to 50 new jobs for the region. A joint venture between waste management firm SITA UK and power company Sembcorp UK, both firms are favouring the Wilton International site in Redcar as the top location for the energy conversion plant.
The plant will use non-hazardous household and commercial waste to reprocess into renewable, clean energy. According to both firms, the green development would enable them to reduce their carbon footprints and supply green energy to the area.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council leader, George Dunning said that the plans were welcomed. He added that currently the renewable energy sector was enjoying great momentum in Teesside and that this latest development was welcomed from both an economic and environmental standpoint.
Mr Dunning further stated that the area currently is home to a world-class labour force trained in the renewable energy sector and that the 50 new jobs would be welcomed and quickly filled. He added that the facilities ability to divert hundreds of thousands in tonnes of office and household waste from ending up in landfill would also be great for Teesside’s credentials as a country-wide leader in sustainable waste management.
