Sainsbury’s launches mobile handset charger recycling in stores

Sainsbury’s has taken further steps to improve its carbon footprint with the latest launch of its new mobile handset battery charger recycling programme.

Part of Sainsbury’s Make the Difference Days, the initiative is the first campaign of its type for the UK grocer and will see the supermarket implement charger recycling stations across all its stores beginning now through 28 August. Hoping to collect more than 150,000 chargers throughout the campaign, the retailer will use the banks in its properties nationwide.

It has been estimated that more than 20 million old chargers are sitting forgotten in drawers in UK households. Over one million additionally chargers are produced each year in the country, which only furthers the growing mountain of recyclable waste being left dormant within UK homes. Sainsbury’s hopes to collect at least 150,000 of these unwanted charging devices from both customers and employees during the recycling drive.

Sainsbury’s property director, Neil Sachdev said that millions of chargers are just lying around and local recycling centres are already keen to take them. He stressed, however, that many residents are unaware the mobile accessory can be dropped off at recycling centres. Mr Sachdev said that by using the drive, the supermarket giant hopes to encourage customers to lead environmentally responsible lives.

Sainsbury’s currently supports a mobile phone recycling scheme, which will be complemented by the addition of the mobile phone charger recycling initiative. The campaign will be run in conjunction with We Are What We Do, the same organisation that ran the successful I Am Not A Plastic Bag campaign during 2007 at the popular retailers.
