Government commends firm’s work reducing food waste

Alex Salmond, Gordon MSP and First Minister, heaped praise on Scottish firm Keenan Recycling recently for the work it is doing recycling food waste into compost. Mr Salmond was speaking while on a visit to the Aberdeen offices of Shell Upstream Europe. Shell Upstream Europe is one of about 30 companies that use Keenan Recycling’s Food Waste Collection Service.

While getting to see Keenan Recycling in action collecting food waste from Shell Upstream Europe, Mr Salmond called on Scots to end the country’s throwaway culture. He said people are taking an increasing level of responsibility regarding recycling but they continue to produce too much waste. He said people have been doing more in recent years to reduce waste. However, there has until recently been a major issue with the ability of large firms to handle the food waste they generate.

He added that Keenan Recycling’s Food Waste Collection Service is the answer to the longstanding problem. He said now that the answer is finally available all companies should be utilizing such services. Grant Keenan, managing director of Keenan Recycling, said his firm had already composted some 1,800 tonnes of food waste at its facility in New Deer, Aberdeenshire, since launching the service earlier this year.

Mr Keenan added that many firms already have systems in place to handle cardboard, paper, cans and plastic but until recently, they have had no way of dealing with their food waste. Food waste recycling services like that provided by Keenan Recycling provide the final missing component in an overall approach to waste recycling.
