Karndean flooring company fined for not recycling

A UK flooring company, which exports across the globe, has been fined for failing to show it had recycled its packaging. Worcester-based Karndean International Limited has been fined £29,700 after admitting nine charges of not recovering and recycling packaging waste between 2006 and 2008.

The case against the firm was brought to Worcester magistrates’ court by the Environmental Agency (EA) under regulations aimed at cutting the amount of commercial waste going to landfill. The luxury flooring company said it takes its environmental responsibilities seriously and will now be complying with the laws.

According to Worcester News, Jill Crawford for the EA told the court they contacted the company in May 2009 as they had failed to register with the agency’s annual compliance scheme. After further investigation, it was found that the company had also failed to register itself for 2006 and 2008.

Agency investigator Louise Goatcher told the court that it is unacceptable for the environment to suffer because of companies like Karndean. She added that businesses are responsible for their own waste and flouting the law is more expensive in the long run than complying. If Karndean had registered with EA, the total cost would have only been £9,000 rather than the £36,000 they were made to pay, which includes victim surcharges and court costs.

UK managing director of Karndean, Pat McDonald, said the company fully acceptable the ruling. He added that the right procedures will be followed from now on.
