Dairy Crest expands availability of environmentally-friendly milk bags

UK firm Dairy Crest is expanding the availability of its more environmentally-friendly milk in bags. Dairy Crest recently announced sales figures that illustrate the success the milk producer has already demonstrated in trials of the new format of bagged milk. The format has proved popular with both consumers and several national retail chains.

Dairy Crest offers a unique, patented bagged milk product called Jugit. Jugit features a reusable, easy-to-pour jug into which Jugit pouched milk (milk in a special bag) is inserted. The design requires substantially less packaging material for retail handling and delivery of the milk to the customer, whilst retaining a convenient and easy-to-use jug for storing and pouring the milk at home.

Conventional plastic milk packaging uses a huge amount of plastic. The Jugit cuts packaging materials by 75 per cent but still delivers a superior consumer experience. Bagged milk has been around for a long time but the messiness of handling the bags and the difficulty of opening them has prevented widespread adoption of the format by the public. The Jugit design addresses all of the issues that have so far held back pouched milk. Compared to conventional plastic ‘poly’ milk bottles, the Jugit system offers a substantial reduction in packaging waste, as well as weight.

Retail trials of Jugit at retailers like Sainsbury’s have gone very well. Sainsbury’s is expanding distribution of Diary Crest’s Jugit line to its branches across the country. Tesco recently launched its own trials of Jugit. Dairy Crest is expanding sales of Jugit to its doorstep customers.
