Waste boss goes undercover for new TV show

The boss of one of Britain’s biggest waste, recycling and renewable energy companies has gone undercover in his own company for a new TV programme. The Channel 4 series Undercover Boss, which sees company big-wigs going incognito on their own front lines, aims to show chief execs how their operations really work.

One of the episodes will see Colin Drummond, chief executive officer of waste, recycling and energy firm Viridor, go back to basics. Speaking about his experience during the making of the show, Mr Drummond said it was a real eye-opener, both personally and professionally.

He added that the encounter gave him a fully rounded view of how the company works on a day-to-day basis and exposed him to the areas they deal with well and the areas they need to work on. Mr Drummond went on to say that the work was hard but gratifying and he felt welcomed by his unsuspecting colleagues.

Many of the Viridor workers were seen throughout the show offering their solutions to certain problems within the company, solutions which Mr Drummond said were welcome and inspiring. He added that he hoped their enthusiasm and dedication came across in the episode.

In the programme, Mr Drummond tells workers he is unemployed and being followed by the cameras as he tries out a variety of jobs at different waste processing sites. During the show, Mr Drummond meets some of the unsung heroes of his company and sees some of the good and not so good work carried out by them.  The Viridor episode of Undercover Boss is due to be screen on Channel 4 on August 12 at 21:00.
