A North American recycling company is launching an online game to encourage people to build sustainable communities in the real as well as the virtual world. Waste Management, the biggest recycler in the country, is releasing Oceanopolis to social networking website Facebook in a bid to get gamers to think about cleaning up the world and conserving resources.
Oceanpolois will act as a virtual world where players can earn points by recycling virtual rubbish and clearing up waste. The good deeds done online can also be transferred into the real world, however, as points for keeping your sustainable community clean translate to coupons that players can use at shops, theatres and restaurants. Players can even get their coupons exchanged for cash if they wish.
In comparison, gamers low on their virtual points can stock up by blogging n Waste Management’s social networking site Greenopolis. The site supports real-world clean-up projects and has promised to donate $1 to Ocean Aid for each Oceanopolis post that occurs during the Seattle Casual Connect Conference, which ends today.
The Oceanopolis scheme aims to capitalise on the popular trend of social gaming while helping create sustainable communities in the real world.
