Essex man could face court for not recycling

A man from Essex could become the first in his area to be prosecuted for not recycling properly. According to local newspaper The Echo, Basildon Council is drawing up a case against a resident who has refused to pay a fixed penalty notice of £75 that was handed to him for not recycling properly.

The Noak Bridge resident was apparently given two previous warnings by the council before receiving the fine. The news comes at the same time as a review of the first six-months of a district-wide compulsory recycling scheme.

In all, 2,365 official warnings were sent to residents in Basildon, with 104 households reaching the second stage before a fine is issues. Warnings were most commonly issued to residents who put recyclable items in their black bags destined for landfill.

In a breakdown of the district’s areas, Laindon residents were found to be the worst recyclers, totting up 553 initial warnings and 21 secondary letters. Vange households came in at second worst, with 352 warnings and 18 letters, and Ramsden residents were the best recyclers with just four initial warnings.

Around 551 tonnes of black bags were steered away from landfill compared to the previous year since the compulsory recycling scheme began, according to the report. The man who may be charged for recycling offences has not been named by the council.
