Southend Council makes recycling pledge

Southend Council has promised families a better waste and recycling service after signing up to a tough ten-point pledge. Together with the national Waste Collection Commitment, the council has vowed to provide a collection service that meets all residents’ needs, while being value-for-money.

After researching what people think about their exisiting rubbish services, the Local Government Association and the Waste and Resource Action Programme developed the new scheme together. Households across the borough were asked about the issues they felt were most important when it came to refuse, including recycling, clean streets and regular collections.

In a report by The Echo, Tony Cox, Southend’s councillor for waste, said the council was showing its commitment for providing resdients with recycling services and waste collections which are right for them, by signing the commitment. He added that the pledge sets out what residents can expect from the new deal and that he hopes their satisfaction will be improved.

Among the ten pledges made by the council is a commitment to reliable and regular refuse collections, a commitment to inform households of any service changes in good time, a commitment to respond to complaints and questions and a commitment to recycle as much material as possible.
