North London Waste Authority announced bidders for grant

Bidders from across the UK have been invited to submit solutions to the North London Waste Authority for the provision of future waste management services including fuel use within North London.

Among the bidders that have placed an outlined entry into the running are Biffa Waste Services Ltd., FCC Skanska, SITA Len Lease, Veolia ES Aurora Ltd., E.ON Energy from Waste, SSE Generation, Covanta Energy Ltd and Urbaser SA.

The announcement of potential bidders today is being hauled as a major step for the North London Waste Authority towards procuring a plan to be in line with government commitments stemming from March 2010 requirements to help pay for new facilities under the Private Finance Initiative. The deal is reportedly worth an estimated £4bn and will include the means of diverting 400,000 tonnes of rubbish away from landfill by 2020.

Chair of the NLWA, Cllr Clyde Loakes said that the governing body was delighted to have received such an influx of interest from the market. He added that several of the leading waste and energy companies in the country had submitted pre-qualification applications. The shortlist of bidders will once again be downsized this coming December.

Councillors across the UK have been pushing incentives onto major waste management and energy companies to build infrastructure that will help the nation meet its upcoming recycling and clean energy targets. EU targets are also not far off with the requirements recently becoming more stringent.
