Recycling scheme nominated for award

A revolutionary new recycling scheme is set to receive a national excellence award in the wake of its monumental achievements.

The brainchild of housing association, Cartrefi Conwy, the scheme involves recycling old bathroom and kitchen equipment and has been dubbed the UK’s first recycling project of its kind. The programme has reached the final stages of selection for the Constructing Excellence in Wales Awards.

The scheme has received high accolades being nominated for the Conwy Regeneration Award at the Pride of Conwy Awards as well. The project fell under a larger plan of Cartrefi Conwy’s to foster a £30m housing improvement programme. Within the scheme, almost 4,000 bathrooms and kitchens have been salvaged as opposed to the refuse being dumped at landfill sites around the region.

Andrew Bowden, chief executive of the group, said that the association was thrilled to be nominated as part of the awards. He called the project innovative and said that receiving recognition would help boost awareness about the programme.

Additionally, the project will help to boost the local economy by creating as many as 200 jobs plus training positions. The project also allows valuable recyclable materials to be gathered and processed for reuse rather then left to rot at landfill.

The UK as a whole has been rallying around recycling efforts in order to meet EU targets in time. Authorities and organisations across the region have begun to implement various schemes to help raise awareness and recycling rates.
