A new mobile recycling firm, ShP will partner with Middle Eastern retailer Emax in a multi-million pound agreement that will see Emax offer mobile phone recycling for the first time in the area.
The consumer mobile phone recycling service will be offered at Emax electronic stores across the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman. Dubbed ‘Cash for Mobiles’, the service will allow customers to hand in redundant mobiles in exchange for cash. The collected phones will then be processed and recycled by ShP. Working mobiles will be refurbished and sent out to developing nations. Those that are not able to work will be recycled under the WEEE Directive.
ShP founder Simon Walsh said that the expansion into the Middle East shows that there is a growing demand for technology recycling, like mobile phones. ShP was one of the first mobile phone recyclers to come about in the UK, so Mr Walsh added it was fitting that the business expand worldwide with its operating model.
Mr Walsh said that ShP would plan to recycle at least three million handsets each year in the Middle East by three years time. According to the recycler, that amount of mobile recycling would drastically cut down on electronic wastage and with assisting the communication between developing countries to grow.
