Coca-Cola recycles 4 tonnes a day with Recycle Zone

Since its inception, Coca-Cola’s Recycle Zone recycling bins programme has collected over four tonnes of recyclables in London’s West End per day.

The soft drink maker revealed the figures during Recycle Week this year, just prior to its launch of UK Recycle Zone’s 66th location in Peterborough. According to the beverage manufacturer, one tonne of materials are being collected each day just at Oxford street. That equals a year of 99 million Coke containers, and a total of 60 per cent of all waste being placed into the 260 bins located around London.

The dual bins contain a compartment for regular rubbish and a compartment for recyclables such as plastic, paper, and aluminium cans. Communications director for Coca-Cola Britain said that the beverage maker was committed to making an impact on its environmental outreach by encouraging consumers to recycle valuable resources found in the empty soda cans.

The soda company has partnered with RecycleBank to offer the rubbish bins and has 66 permanent locations as well as providing bins for events and festivals across the UK. The campaign started originally in March when the cola producer decided to partner with Westminster City Council to help move towards an all green Olympics for 2012. The partnership came about when Coca-Cola surveyed consumers to find that over half of Londoners desired to recycle away from home but were lacking the facilities.

Both the Isle of Wight Festival and V Festival will use the Coca-Cola recycle bins. The beverage maker has been advertising its recycle scheme since late last year.
