New recycling bins have been put in at the Newcastle Airport as a means of helping passengers dispose of plastic and paper waste in a more eco-friendly manner.
The specially created bins were installed at 40 locations across the airport terminal during the past week as efforts across the country are being increased to boost recycling. Part of the larger, Recycle Zone project, the scheme will help passengers recycle in a more convenient manner. The Recycle Zone project is being managed in conjunction with WRAP, Coca-Cola Enterprises, and Recoup.
Currently, the UK boasts over 50 set recycling zones, however, that number is expected to increase by an additional 30 by the end of this year. Environmental advisor at Newcastle Airport, Helen Hughes said that by working with Recoup and Coca-Cola, the airport hopes to usher in several new initiatives designed to benefit the environment.
A spokesperson for Zero Waste Scotland/WRAP applauded the travel hub for its efforts to move towards better recycling practices. Passengers using Newcastle Airport over the summer holidays will still have to adhere to travel restrictions and bans on liquids in carry-on luggage, and are reminded to adhere to the rules to avoid delays in security checks.
Authorities and governing bodies across the UK are working hard to boost recycling as UK and EU recycling targets loom closer. Councils have been announcing schemes more aggressively than in previous years as the government puts pressure on to meet upcoming targets.
