Leeds householders will now be able to place aerosol cans in with other green bin recycling items.
The Leeds City Council announced the initiative, which will partner with Alupro and Unilever, the aluminum packaging recycling body. All spray containers collected in the borough will now be recycled into new aerosol cans. A majority of the recycled cans will then be refilled at Unilever’s factory on Coal Road, Seacroft. The factory is Europe’s biggest aerosol manufacturing facility.
Cllr Tom Murray, executive member of environmental sciences, stated that the new scheme was economical because it will allow aerosols to be recycled with drinks and food containers without additional fees. Mr Murray added that the aluminum and steel used to make aerosols can be recycled repeatedly without compromising its quality. He added that the move would help keep valuable natural resources from ending up at landfill and reduce the city’s carbon footprint.
Councils across the country have begun to mobilise with various recycling and waste cutting schemes, as EU recycling targets grow closer. Authorities in Britain will aim to increase household recycling more drastically than ever before. Many of the new schemes have been announced in the wake of the new coalition government scrapping Labour’s ‘pay as you throw’ legislature.
Now, the new government is expected to endorse a more incentive-based approach that will see households being rewarded for recycling efforts, as opposed to penalised. Despite, these announcements, however, many councils have still moved ahead with pay schemes in recent months.
