Sheffield Extends Community Recycling

Waste firm Veolia Environmental Services has announced that a trial scheme to collect textiles and cans from 12,000 properties in Sheffield will be extended until December 2008. The Reclaim team has gathered nearly 200 tonnes of cans and textiles for recycling in Sheffield.
The trial was initially launched in April 2005, and works in four areas of the city. The four areas–High Green, Hackenthorpe, Crookes and Fulwood - work with local charity group Reclaim, which carries out the collections on behalf of Veolia. Reclaim has collected 97 tonnes of cans and 92 tonnes of textiles as part of the scheme over the past three years. Other areas in Sheffield are only provided with paper and card recycling, although a pilot scheme in the south east of the city also picks up green waste.
Judith Turner, director of operations, collection and recycling for Veolia in Sheffield, commented: “As an ambassador of reduce, reuse, recycle, we want to maximise the recycling opportunities throughout the city. The textiles and cans recycling trial makes it more convenient for the areas involved to recycle and benefits local charities at the same time. We hope residents in the trial areas will continue to support the scheme.”
