Wilton, New Hampshire Regional Recycling Center Faces Additional Costs

The Wilton, New Hampshire Regional Recycling Center is facing some additional costs Selectman Dan Donovan told the combined budget committees of Wilton and Lyndeborough last week. In order to stay in operation, the recycling center must buy a $2.5 million smoke scrubber or shut down by 2010.
The recycling center must buy the smoke scrubber to meet the state’s new clean air standards.
The installation of control equipment could also cause costs to go up by $300,000 a year, said the state Department of Environmental Services. If the incinerator is not updated, burnable material would have to be hauled away.

A preliminary budget is up about 5.6 percent over last year, due to rises in the cost of fuel, employee wages and benefits and equipment repairs. The preliminary total is $627,350. There may be some changes, however, because the 2007 books are not totally accounted for.
Greenville, Lyndeborough, Mason and Temple share the center, with each town paying a percentage of costs. The combined contribution of the member towns is set at $235,392, with Wilton paying the remaining tab.

The center recycles a range of materials including the following: three colors of glass, steel and aluminum cans, several varieties of paper and cardboard, assorted plastics, batteries, household appliances, tires, waste oil, rags and clothing and scrap metal.
