Recycle Week kicks off with electrical recycling theme

As Recycle Week takes off on Monday, the theme for the campaign has been announced - ‘Love your electricals’.

Based on research compiled by Recycle Now, the national recycling scheme, examining people’s attitudes towards small electrical devices, such as mobile handsets, MP3 players, and laptops, it was discovered that many hold onto such items long after they use them. Of the respondents, 40 per cent said it was too sad to part with such an item, even once it had been made redundant.

Another 41 per cent felt the electronic may come in handy later, and 23 per cent thought the item too valuable to rubbish it. In support of this week, The British Heart Foundation will help thousands of electronic horders ‘let go’. The foundation will collect all unwanted small electricals, so long as they are in working order, and use them to benefit local charities.

Director of Retail for the British Heart Foundation, Mike Lucas said that Recycle Week is a great partnership for the foundation as it aids BHF in securing vital funds for future fights against heart disease.

Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman, said in support of the initiative that everyone has electrical items they can dispose of. By donating them to charities, she added, these items can be recycled to help the environment and used to help others in the future.

Many charities and organisations have begun to embrace electrical recycling, asking local residents to donate old items to be recycled for funding. As more and more businesses and groups learn the lucrative nature of recycle, it has become a global means to raise money for charity.
