As SITA UK continues to search for methods that will cut down on waste and boost recycling, it has been concluded that education still remains the most effective way to breed avid recyclers.
In a survey, sponsored by leading waste management firm SITA UK, education came out as the dominant tool to improving recycling. The results are released just a week after the new coalition government abandoned Labour’s plans to implement fines in favour of a rewards-based approach.
SITA UK will launch a second survey that will look at barriers currently facing the waste management infrastructure developments. In all 46 respondents participated in this latest survey. The results showed that 56 per cent believed better education is the key to increasing recycling, while 31 per cent said incentives was the best method, and only 11 per cent thought fines were the appropriate avenue.
Anthony Durston, for SITA UK, said the results made it clear that education was believed to be the key in recycling practices. Mr Durston added that there was a trend towards the ‘carrot over the stick’ approach.
The news comes despite the coalition government promising to cut down on advertisement spending, which some have expressed concerns could hurt promotional tools linked to recycling. The new government has made it clear that recycling will be approached on an incentive basis rather than with the threat of fines.
