A NEW plant which replaces the recycling facilities in Ashington opened this week in North Seaton. The new £1m facility has been developed by SITA in partnership with Northumberland County Council.
The new plant is the first part of a £12m investment in upgrading 11 of the 13 ‘household waste recovery centres’ in the county.
SITA claims the new site will make it simpler to recycle household waste such as glass, paper and more hazardous waste including batteries and fridges. The plant is built on a brownfield site on Castle Island Way.
Richard Hincliffe, SITA’s general manager for Northumberland, commented: “This new recycling facility is second to none.
“The completion of North Seaton also means that the old inadequate recycling facilities at Ellington will close.”
Northumberland County is targeting a goal of recycling 40 per cent of all household waste by 2010.
The planning application for the plant, which was funded by a £40.8m PFI deal, was criticised by nearby residents, who launched a protest campaign against the proposed location.
Residents felt that the plant would create intolerable levels of noise for the homes just 150 metres away.
