President Obama visits affected areas in BP oil spill disaster

US President Barack Obama is urging party supporters to bring in the next wave of clean energy technologies.

During a visit to areas that been affected by the massive BP oil spill, Mr Obama said that the government would provide full resources to afflicted regions. There are 17,500 National Guard soldiers assigned to the incident. Lamar McKay, BP’s US head, will return in front of Congress to provide further detail on BP’s clean up progress.

Oil has now been spewing into the Gulf Stream for two months now since the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil rig exploded and sank, killing 11. The British oil firm has estimated the total cost of clean up will be $1.6bn (£1bn).

Mr Obama is in Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi touring the damaged areas in what marks his fourth trip to the region since the incident took place. During his time there, Mr Obama promised residents living on the Gulf coast that beaches would once again return to their pristine condition. He again reiterated his intentions to have BP front the entirety of clean up costs and damages.

Mr Obama will meet with BP execs face to face for the first time this coming Wednesday. The meeting is expected to revolve around demands for payment. Since the incident BP’s shares have continued in decline falling on Monday down by 9 per cent. Directors are also discussing the option to suspend dividend payments to shareholders. The US Coast Guard has predicted that around 35,000 barrels of oil are leaking out each day.
