World Cup kicks-off increased TV recycling

According to SITA UK, television recycling steadily increases during the weeks leading up to the World Cup.

Just last weekend, the waste management body said that 400 TVs had been dropped off at its Haverton Hill recycling facility as people upgrade their TV sets in time for the most important matches in football. Most old TVs are recycled in favour of newer, plasma and LCD screens.

SITA UK’s operations manager for Tees Valley, Jon Westwick said that the difference in number of TVs being brought in has been noticeable. He added that the company believes this is correlated to the beginning of the World Cup in South Africa.

The firm additionally said that such a spike in TV recycling was only mirrored by Christmas time, when people receive TVs as gifts and then recycle their old ones. A television is 99.9 per cent recyclable, so the company stresses the importance of bringing a TV to a recycling facility instead of sending it to rot in landfill. On Monday, operators at the Tees Valley site said that the ISO containers designated for TVs were overflowing.

The waste management firm typically sees 30 tonnes of television sets per month, but last month received up to 45 tonnes as England fans get ready to watch its matches on the best possible screen. The World Cup kicked-off last Friday, and England’s draw with the US on Saturday has become a hot topic of conversation.
