As food waste in the UK becomes a mounting concern, Prince Charles has spoken out against the unnecessary waste of ‘billions’ of pounds in food each year.
More and more, councils across the country are pushing for composting and food waste collections schemes. In a recent speech at the Organic Research Centre in Berkshire, Prince Charles hailed organic farming as the most sustainable means to provide food on a global level.
The prince was there on a visit to learn how best to convert his own farm, Home Farm, located at his Highgrove estate into a sustainable endeavor. While on the premises, he told his audience that is was ‘absolute nonsense’ to say that the world could not be fed by organic farms alone.
The Organic Research Centre was started three decades ago to be used as a means of educating the public on sustainable farming practices. Additionally, the farm works hard to give evidence-based arguments to policy makers and farmers regarding food waste and organic farming.
The centre’s founders have also said they aim to further develop organic farming methods. It is believed by many environmentalists, including Prince Charles and the founders of the ORC, that organic farming is essential to saving the earth’s vital resources in the face of global climate change.
