Women are the most likely to recycle

According to a new survey, older, married women are more likely to recycle than any other social group.

The recent poll revealed that over 40 per cent of women marked the recycling bin as the handiest household item. In fact, the recycling bin ranked higher than the vacuum cleaner, the microwave, and even Tupperware.

In contrast, just one third of men consider recycling storage a key item in a household compared with the remote control or a screwdriver. Additionally, the survey also confirms the long-held belief that the elderly recycle more often. Over half of those polled in the 65 plus age category reported that the recycling bin was the most important item in their household. In comparison just a third of 25 to 44 year olds deemed it to be an essential commodity.

The survey, conducted by Swedish firm Clas Ohlson, also revealed that married couples have higher recycling rates than singles. Clas Ohlson has been systematically introducing recycling bins across Britain to help boost recycling rates in the country.

The Women’s Institute’s Sorella le Var said that whoever runs the household will be more aware of waste reduction. She also added that recycling is just as much about responsibility to the next generation and the planet, which is natural for a mother.

Currently, recycling rates in Britain rest at just over one third, but councils have been scrambling to increase those rates as EU targets get closer. Doretta Cocks at the Weekly Waste Campaign countered, however, saying males and the younger generation are just as eager to recycle.
