Plans for a new exhibition and conference centre were just announced as a highlight of the up and coming ‘green enterprise district’ being built in east London.
The multi-million pound facility will be constructed as part of Mayor Boris Johnson’s brainchild, which according to the Mayor will bring 6,000 jobs to the city. Siemens, a popular technology firm, is set to invest £30 million in the centre in Newham. The efforts are in the hopes of regenerating one of the poorest areas in the capital.
Dubbed the Siemens Pavilion, the city hopes the facility will become a permanent showcase for all forms of sustainable technologies, attracting 100,000 visitors annually. Set to be built at the western end on the Royal Docks, the centre is expected to open sometime in early 2012.
It was announced, that once operational the centre will be a base for 230 of Siemens employees as well as create 50 new jobs for local residents. The project is just part of a series of planned developments aimed at turning east London into a community emphasising green enterprise. The new ‘green district’ will include six boroughs - Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Newham, Hackney, Havering, and Barking and Dagenham.
The overall goal will be to appeal to low-carbon businesses to generate green-collar jobs in the region. A major emphasis will be particularly placed on industries such as recycling and waste management, new renewable energy technologies, and innovative building products.
