Portsmouth Marriott now recycles 98 per cent of all waste

The Portsmouth Marriott Hotel has reported that with the launch of its aggressive new recycling scheme in March, the hotel now recycles 98 per cent of all waste generated.

The programme, which includes both energy saving initiatives and recycling, focuses on all aspects of the hotel business from bedrooms to restaurants to entertainment amenities. Working in partnership with local Portsmouth experts such as ACM and PDM, the scheme was able to become successful in a two-month time frame.

After completing an eight week trial period, Portsmouth is now the only Marriott hotel in Europe that has successfully maintained a comprehensive recycling programme. Holding the title of highest recycling rates for all Marriott UK properties, the Portsmouth hotel will be used as a template for implementing similar schemes in other hotels across the country.

Some of the new initiatives include recycling bins inside of the rooms, training for staff on waste separation, and steps to cut energy usage. The current 98 per cent recycling rate that the hotel maintains, according to hotel staff, is a collaboration by both guests and staff members.

The hotel’s efforts received the GOLD award presented by the Gold committee for the Green Tourism Business Scheme within the UK. According to Jon Proctor, chairman for the Gold committee, it is the first property for Marriott to receive the GOLD award and that it proves good quality service can go hand-in-hand with eco-friendly and sustainable hospitality.

The General Manager at the Portsmouth Marriott said that the firm is committed to protecting the environment and initiatives are in place to decrease energy use and recycle where possible. He added that the hotel was completely behind all of the initiatives.
