The Green party was led to general election triumph today by Caroline Lucas in a victory at Brighton Pavilion. Dr Lucas made history by becoming the party’s first MP at Westminster. With 31 per cent of the vote at a 1,252 majority, the Greens continue their strong showing in Brighton.
Back in 2005, the party secured 22 per cent of the vote in Brighton, where they have maintained a strong support for years. Dr Lucas said that the party won because of its strong set of councillors in the area. She added that Brighton residents were accustomed to voting Green.
Lucas, married with two kids, has been influential in the party’s campaign to go mainstream since 1986. Educated at Malvern Girls’ College, her credentials include campaigning for CND as well as an Oxfam advisor. The newest Westminster MP was elected to the Oxford council in the 1990s, and has served formerly in the European Parliament for the South East.
The Green Party has made its biggest show ever in this year’s elections, putting forth 335 candidates across Britain. The political party has spent £400,000 to make its campaign vote-worthy. Headed by its slogan, ‘Fair is worth fighting for’, the Greens highlighted a strong environmental policy, but also gave coverage to an aggressive economic policy as well as an intense social justice agenda.
The Green Party has had a better show of voters this year than in any past elections. Some analysts have attributed this to the environmental issues being brought to the forefront of political policy this election.
