Judges for award facilitator Building magazine have announced the winning firms for this year’s WRAP sustainable construction awards. The competition, which seeks to identify the most sustainable building firm each year, was won by Wilmott Dixon.
Wilmott Dixon’s dedication to sustainable building, according to the judges, made the firm stick out in the competition. Additionally, Wilmott Dixon was one of the first building firm to sign up for WRAP’s Halving Waste to Landfill scheme. The contractor was able to divert 85 per cent of its waste from landfill.
Mace group received high commendations next to Wilmott Dixon among several other firms that were short listed. These included Balfour Beatty, Asda, and Costain. Asda was also one of the first companies to sign with WRAP’s waste commitment.
Other companies have continued to follow in WRAP’s model to commit to diverting as much waste as possible away from landfill. Costain has implemented sustainable building at Reading university’s new business school, where the contractor ensured that 85 per cent of the 1,370 tonnes of waste produced on site were recovered or recycled.
Balfour Beatty cut their entire waste generation down by 42 per cent in 2007, and an additional 21 per cent the next year. The construction firm has also committed to incorporating 25 per cent of content from recycled materials by 2012.
The push to recycle has been growing globally as concerns over international climate change and emissions issues begin to mount. Companies across the board of industries are aiming to reduce waste, curb emissions, and cut down on energy use.
