Walgreens has announced the launch of a new recycling programme aimed at promoting mobile phone and ink cartridge recycling at all store locations. Beginning 22 April, Earth Day, all Walgreens’s customers can drop off any used or unwanted mobile handsets or ink cartridges at their nearest Walgreens photo counter.
The US Environmental Protection Agency stated recently that recycling one million mobile phones would amount to saving enough energy to run over 185 households for a year. Chuck Greener, vice president of corporate affairs and communications at Walgreens, said that the recycling programme would provide customers with an accessible, convenient way to recycle their mobile phones and make their contribution to fighting global climate change.
Beginning Sunday, Walgreens will launch their ‘Earth Day Shop’ campaign. The campaign, featured on the company’s website, will highlight an assortment of environmentally friendly products including beauty, household and personal care products. From the 22 April to 25 April, for all online ‘Earth Day Shop’ purchases, Walgreens will donate 30 per cent of sales to the World Wildlife Fund.
The company has become well known as an eco-friendly retailer. Last October, Walgreens opened the first chemist’s to become LEED certified under the regulations set out by the US Green Building Council. Last year, Walgreens was responsible for recycling close to 71,000 tonnes of cardboard. The equivalent of over 1.2 million trees in paper products.
