STAPLES Canada takes aggressive stance on e-waste recycling

STAPLES Canada has announced it will be expanding their requirements for accepting recyclable e-waste collection. E-waste, or electronic waste, is becoming a key target area for the recycling community as more and more electronic material is unnecessarily sent to landfill.

The move comes as the business supply store enters the second phase of their Ontario Electronic Stewardship. The new requirements took effect on April 1 and applies to all STAPLES stores in the greater Ontario area. Now customers can take items such as TVs, laptops and desktop computers, answering machines, telephones, digital cameras, speakers and projectors to their nearest STAPLES location for recycling.

STAPLES Canada has been implementing significant changes in their business structure in order to provide more sustainable operating practices. Initiatives have included energy use reduction by using lesser wattage light bulbs, using rechargeable battery recycling programmes, and pioneering electronic recycling programmes for their customers.

Leigh Pearson, facilities and enviromental services manager at STAPLES Canada, said that the company has taken major steps to reduce their impact on the environment. He added that phase II of the Ontario Electronic Stewardship will allow for the recycling of everything from speakers to printers.

STAPLES will first introduce the progamme in all of its Ontario stores. The programme will allow customers in the area to recycle any unwanted or redundant electronic equipment in an effort to keep old e-waste out of landfills.
